Eighteen-year-old Lia finds out that Cassie has died of anorexia, a disease the two best friends proudly shared. Her death sends Lia’s mental state into a downward spiral, along with the numbers on the scale: 103, 101, 98, 88… Not for the faint at heart, this title takes a realistic look at the eating disorder that is devouring Lia’s life. How much can she lose without losing it all?

The book Wintergirls is about a girl Named Lia. She and her best friend, Cassie, made a bet to be the skinniest of the two. In the process of trying to be skinny, Cassie feels overwhelmed. She starts taking pills & drinking. Which is a bad combination with puking. She burns out the lining of her stomach, causing her esophagus to rupture. She dies in the motel room bathroom.
With the thought of her best friend dead, Lia, now feels the pressure that she has NOT won the bet even though Cassie is dead. She wonders if the bet is over, or will she die trying to remain the smallest?
