All NOCCA Riverfront students in the Classical Instrumental Program are required to take Theory, Musicianship, Chamber Music, Music History, Skills Class, and Performance Class. Non-pianists are also afforded the opportunity to take piano classes or private piano lessons.
The NOCCA Theory/Musicianship curriculum is a rigorous conservatory-level training plan. Students who successfully pass all levels will be armed with the musical fundamentals to be highly successful in a music degree program. Click on NOCCA Theory Curriculum for a detailed outline of written theory topics. Click on NOCCA Musicianship Curriculum for a detailed outline of aural skills and sight-singing.
The Classical Instrumental Program’s Chamber Music classes are reason alone to attend! Students have the opportunity coach with NOCCA’s world-class faculty and work with one another. Chamber Music builds the listening and collaborative skills essential to musicians.
Music History classes focus on a variety of relevant topics from the main periods. In each quarter a different area of study is offered, often tailored to the interests and instruments of the students in the class. The skills class is also customized to the specific instrumentalists enrolled. Skills classes always involve significant sight-reading and collaborative practice, but may also include excerpt studies and tuning for instrumentalists, scale and arpeggio drills for pianists.
NOCCA’s Performance Class occurs every Friday from 4-5:30. Students from all three musical disciplines: Classical Vocal, Classical Instrumental, and Jazz, meet in Reily Recital Hall to perform for one another. If you would like to observe a Performance Class please contact Dr. Ji Sook Park at jpark@nocca.com or Dr. Jee Yeoun Ko at jko@nocca.com.
