Audition Guidelines
At an audition, piano majors must be able to (1) demonstrate all major and minor scales and arpeggios in 4 octaves; (2) perform one composition by Bach from memory (you may choose from two-part and three-part inventions, movements from suites or partitas, or any prelude and fugue from Well-Tempered Clavier; (3) perform one or two movements from a classical sonata or sonatina from memory; (4) demonstrate at least rudimentary skills in sight reading music. Pianists who are auditioning as seniors must perform Prelude and Fugue from Bach Well-Tempered Clavier and 2 contrasting movements from a Sonata by Beethoven, Haydn, or Mozart. Students in other instruments must (1) demonstrate all major and minor scales and arpeggios; (2) perform two contrasting pieces from memory; (3) demonstrate at least rudimentary skills in sight reading music.
