The new Faubourg Quartet takes on a Wynton Marsalis piece for its concert at NOMA

New Orleans is known for being a blend of cultures and musical styles, so it makes sense that more and more adventurous players and listeners are setting aside old labels and old presumptions to stick a toe into a new genre. This week, two provocative concerts bring jazz and classical music together in an exciting way.

A fully notated string quartet composed in 1995 by jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis will be the centerpiece of the Faubourg Quartet’s program at the New Orleans Museum of Art on Thursday.

Organized by cellist—and NOCCA faculty member—Jee Yeoun Ko, the Faubourg includes two violinists from the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra: concertmaster Joe Meyer and Zorica Dimova. Violist Dave Rebeck has worked with the LPO, the New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars and in the improving string quartet led by local bassist James Singleton. (Tickets for the 7 p.m. concert, which also features Dvorak’s folk-drenched “American” quartet are $10 at the door.)
