Jazz Faculty Work Premieres With GNOYO
Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestras bring the spirit of New Orleans to Carnegie Hall
The Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestras (GNOYO) will bring music of New Orleans to Charleston, SC; Williamsburg, VA; Washington, DC; and New York, NY with their East Coast Tour, June 23–28, 2015.
In addition to music by Antonín Dvořák, programs will feature three pieces by Haitian composer Férère Laguerre arranged by John Jost, the Edward Grieg piano concerto performed by 12-year-old pianist Caleb Borick, and a world premiere by New Orleans composer Mike Rihner (pictured). Rihner’s New Orleans Symphonic Dances are inspired by the city’s rich cultural history and include a Cajun waltz and Congo Bamboula, a lively New Orleans street dance.
The orchestra is led by GNOYO Music Director Dr. Jean Montès, an accomplished conductor, musician, educator, clinician, lecturer, and performer. Dr. Montès passionately challenges and stimulates audiences and musicians alike and works with enthusiasm for music of all world cultures.
The Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestras have been recognized both locally and nationally for a strong commitment to music education. Now in its twentieth season, GNOYO provides young musicians from diverse backgrounds with the opportunity to participate in a high-quality full orchestra program. The 2015 touring orchestra brings together current GNOYO students and alumni. Join GNOYO on their East Coast Tour, and share the experience of New Orleans’ cultural vitality and musical spirit.
