The fall 2015 semester included a special NORDC/NOBA Center for Dance (CFD) project in collaboration with the iconic Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH), culminating in two lecture demonstration performances with DTH company dancers on Friday, November 20, 2015 (10:00am morning performance for over 2,000 local schoolchildren at Mahalia Jackson Theater; 7:00pm community lecture demonstration at Dillard University for nearly 250 audience members). The project was open by audition to students currently enrolled in the Purple Track of the CFD Pre-Professional Program for the 2015-2016 Academic Year. Chevron Master Artist Robert Garland, who is the Resident Choreographer for Dance Theatre of Harlem, selected 14 CFD students to participate in the DTH Project. Additional rehearsals for the project have been led by Chevron Master Artist in Residence and former DTH principal danseur Donald Williams, along with DTH Ballet Master Kellye Saunders.
In addition to the special performance project with CFD Pre-Professional students, a free open community master class was held for 27 participants ages 14 and up on Thursday, November 19 in The Chevron Studio at Lyons NORDC Center, led by DTH Resident Choreographer Robert Garland. On Saturday, November 21, nearly 30 CFD Pre-Professional students participated in a master class led by DTH Artistic Director Virginia Johnson (also at Lyons Center). NOBA also presented Dance Theatre of Harlem master classes for students of both NOCCA and Tulane University.
