SPILL: October 25 – 27
October 25 – 27: SPILL, a new theatrical work by playwright and Emmy-nominee Leigh Fondakowski and artist Reeva Wortel
In 2008, members of New York’s acclaimed Tectonic Theatre company came to NOCCA to work with our students and create a new work calledSE-PAR-ATE, centered around the Plessy v. Ferguson court case and the issue of discrimination. It was a life-changing experience.
Last year, one of Tectonic’s best known writers, Leigh Fondakowski, came to NOCCA to work on a different piece: SPILL, a new work about life in Louisiana during the 87 days of the Deepwater Horizon/BP oil spill. Fondakowski won raves as head writer for Tectonic’s masterpiece, The Laramie Project, and also landed an Emmy nomination for her adaptation of the work for HBO.
Fondakowski has developed SPILL in conjunction with NOCCA students and faculty, as well as colleagues from New York. She’s distilled hours of interviews with fishermen, engineers, BP officials, and others to create a thought-provoking, nuanced drama about the dramatic explosion aboard the Deepwater Horizon, the tragic death of eleven men, and the devastating spill that followed. SPILL also features a collection of life-sized painted portraits of the interviewees, created by artist Reeva Wortel.
