Students Culminate Black History Month With School-Wide Performance
NOCCA students hosted their Sixth Annual Black History Celebration at Freda Lupin Hall. Students across several disciplines collaborated together to honor African American artists. The student run production allowed students to gather as a community to reflect on the past.
“It is important to celebrate my culture and my heritage,” Hannah Hubbard (pictured left), Musical Theater and Academic Studio student said. “It is another way for others in the community to learn what black history is and what it means to the black community.”
The performers paid homage to artists that paved the way in the arts. Students found the Black History Month Celebration to be an opportunity to perform for their fellow peers, but also a time teach them a lesson about embracing their history.
“It is important that students take the chance to learn from it and see that we can move people and make people feel and understand what we mean when we say this is our history,” Kevin Gullage (pictured far right), Jazz and Academic Studio student said. “It is like F.U.B.U- For Us By Us.”
Demetrius Chambliss, Jazz and Academic Studio student, directed this year’s show. Chambliss was grateful that he was able to conduct a show with artist participation and teacher support. “I am happy that the faculty took the time out to help and appreciated the show,” Demetrius said.
