Wynton Marsalis donned a new hat on Monday, as his New York alma mater, The Juilliard School, tapped him to lead its jazz education program. The appointment also signals an expanded relationship between the prestigious music school and Jazz at Lincoln Center, where Marsalis will continue to serve as managing and artistic director.
Both a Pulitzer prize-winning composer and a nine-time Grammy Award winner, Marsalis has taken a leading role in the institutionalization of jazz. His connection with Juilliard dates to 1979, when he entered the school as a student of the legendary classical trumpeter William Vacchiano, who also had been Miles Davis‘ teacher at Juilliard. When the school created a jazz program in 2001, Marsalis was a key adviser.
