The Extraordinary Ordinary: Writing Flash Nonfiction
Our everyday worlds can be fascinating and surprising. We just need to pay close attention. In this 3-week course, students will excavate the world around them to write flash creative nonfiction– true stories told artfully.
Creative Nonfiction uses the descriptive language of poetry, the story-telling techniques of fiction and the fact-based material of nonfiction. “Flash” Nonfiction refers to short pieces of prose that aim to give the reader a burst of meaningful experience, often under a page in length. In The Extraordinary Ordinary we’ll study the building blocks of creative nonfiction: scene, summary, research and reflection. Our brief writings will begin with observation and end with revelation.
Each week students will read examples of flash creative nonfiction and write interactive prompts from The Art of Noticing: 131 Ways to Spark Creativity, Find Inspiration, and Discover Joy in the Everyday.
New York Times contributor and The Art of Noticing author Rob Walker will visit the class to discuss his book and student writing.
At the end of the three weeks, student work will be anthologized on a website.
Enrollment Guidelines: Students must demonstrate an interest in writing and commit to attending each class of the workshop session; no audition required.
Open to 9th through 12th grade students..
