Creative Writing Student Wins 1st Place Letter Contest
NOCCA is proud to announce that Creative Writing | Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies Student, Jessica Xu won first place (Grades 9-12) in the 2017 Louisiana’s Letter about Literature Contest.
The contest, supported by the Louisiana Center for the Book in the State Library of Louisiana, allowed students from Fourth to 12th grade to submit letters thanking authors, to thank them and to explain how their works changed their way of thinking about the world or themselves.
Jessica wrote her letter to Daniel Keys, the author of “Flowers for Algernon.” Xu said that the science-fiction story was about humans, how they feel about their surroundings, and people’s attempts to change how they fit into society. She believed that the ideas from the story related to her life.
As the first place winner, Jessica will receive $100 and have her letter submitted to the Library of Congress for the national competition.
