The Rose Tattoo chronicles a three-year journey of Serafina delle Rose (played by Lillian J. Small), an immigrant who is a pillar of her tight-knit community reduced to rubble after the sudden death of her husband. Her friends and loved ones beg for her to return to the fold, but she can’t overcome her grief. She cloisters herself away and keeps her daughter Rosa captive like Rapunzel in a magic tower. But just like Rapunzel, she’s impossible to imprison, and she’s met a sailor who would rescue her. NOCCA alumnus Matthew Raetz plays Jack Hunter, the boy in question. Raetz graduated in 2014 before starting college at Meadows School of the Arts at SMU.
“Matthew has been incredible to work with,” says director Augustin J Correro, “His talent and professionalism place him on par with the many seasoned professionals in the rehearsal room. He has a skill level that sets him apart from many other college-level actors, and I’m sure NOCCA played a huge part in that distinction.”
This performance which will be in the Samuel Dubois Cook Theatre on the Dillard Campus. Audience members will be up close and personal with this nosy, over-the-top circus of a town in modern dress, and you just might find yourself on their front lawn in the middle of a fracas.
