NOCCA Students Receive Top Awards In New Orleans Opera Association Youth Vocal Competition

Louisiana’s arts conservatory New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) is proud to share the news that current Classical Vocal students Emily Sheets, Imani Francis, Lindsey Reynolds and Ryan Reynolds as well as Musical Theatre student Eddie Falshaw received top honors in the recent youth vocal competition coordinated by the New Orleans Opera Association.

The competition was judged by professionals in the field of opera namely Amy Pfrimmer (Tulane), Kathleen Halm (Soprano), and Betsy Uschkrat (Loyola). Ellen Frohnmayer (Loyola) was the master clinician presenting a master class during the competition while the judges deliberated. Diana Aidos (Loyola), provided professional piano accompanying for many of the students. High school sophomores, juniors, and seniors were judged on quality of voice, musicality, technical skill, diction, interpretation, and presentation. Names were removed and students were given numbers (picked randomly to sing) to facilitate complete objective judging of all candidates.
One male and one female vocalist were awarded first place and receive a prize of $1,000 each. Second place winners (one male and one female) received $500 each.
About The Competition
A major legacy for the New Orleans Opera Association, Loyola, Tulane, and NOCCA, the competition greatly benefits young vocal students in Louisiana and promotes artistic excellence, provides financial support to young vocalists, and encourages young local singers throughout the entire State of Louisiana.
The New Orleans Opera Association’s youth vocal competition is a collaborative effort with Loyola University of New Orleans – College of Music and Fine Arts and Preparatory Program (Loyola), Newcomb Department of Music, Tulane University (Tulane), and The New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA). The competition is held yearly, moving back and forth between the venues of Loyola, NOCCA, and Tulane.
The competition was created by Debby Hirsch Wood with the New Orleans Opera Association and instrumental in the organization and planning of this competition is Carol Rausch (New Orleans Opera Association and Loyola), Robert Lyall, Timothy Todd Simmons, R. Ranney Mize, and Nancy Watts (New Orleans Opera Association), Donald R. Boomgaarden (Loyola), Amy Pfrimmer and C. Leonard Raybon (Tulane), and Phyllis Treigle and Kyle Wedberg (NOCCA).
