Creative Writing Welcomes US Poet Laureate
Virtual Masterclass Brings National Artist For Discussion
NOCCA is honored to welcome and host the United States Poet Laureate Joy Harjo into the Creative Writing Department virtual classroom this week. Ms. Harjo will discuss her writings sharing along inspirations. Specifically in the masterclass, NOCCA students have prepared questions for Joy and her recent collection, An American Sunrise.
Ms. Harjo, a poet, writer and musician as well as a member of the Muscogee Creek Nation draws upon Native American stories and myths within her work. Born in 1951, Harjo did not have an easy start to her life as a multidisciplinary artist. Her memoir Crazy Brave discusses her father’s alcoholism, her abusive stepfather, teen motherhood, a failed first marriage and living in poverty — before finding the “spirit of poetry.”
NOCCA is currently looking for the next generation of young artists ready for the challenge of NOCCA pre-professional arts training. Interested high schools students should visit www.NOCCA.com to learn how to apply.
