NOCCA is proud to announce that NOCCA students I’Maya Gibbs, Dontrel Mitchell and Kamryn Roane have been selected as recipients of the Posse Foundation Scholarship.
I’Maya a full-day NOCCA academic student studies Drama, Dontrel attends New Orleans Science & Math High School for academics and studies Media Arts at NOCCA and Kamryn is also a full-day NOCCA academic student with a focus of Musical Theatre. Becoming a member of the Posse Foundation is a huge accomplishment for these young artists.
The Posse Foundation awards students full-tuition scholarships to partner colleges such as Case Western Reserve University, Illinois Wesleyan University, University of Notre Dame, Villanova University and Tulane University.
In addition to tuition, students are provided with a number of support systems referred to as their ‘posse.’ This concept was inspired by a student from a challenging background who dropped out of a prestigious university, saying, “I would have succeeded if only I had had my posse with me.”
Students selected for this award are nominated by their high schools then are evaluated through an intensive interview process. Students must exemplify high academic potential and leadership qualities.
In the Fall of 2020, through the Posse Scholarship, I’Maya and Dontrel will be attending Case Western Reserve University, and Kamryn will be attending Illinois Wesleyan University.
Of the original 600-plus nominees, only 60 New Orleans students receive the coveted award, ten students making up the ‘posse’ for each of the five participating colleges.
